About the Diocese
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III is the 117th Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria. His Holiness' Papacy is marked by the growth in Coptic Churches outside of Egypt. To address the needs of these churches, His Holiness felt the urgency to establish dioceses abroad. Hence, in 1991 the first Coptic Orthodox Diocese to be established in the United Kingdom was the Diocese of Birmingham, later known as the Diocese of the Midlands & Affiliated Areas. H.H. Pope Shenouda III appointed His Grace Bishop Missael, at the time a General Bishop to oversee this Diocese.The Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Midlands & Affiliated Areas is composed of the following regions:

H.G. Bishop Missael
His Grace Bishop Missael starting as a General Bishop established St. Mary & St. Antony's Coptic Church in 1985 and later established the Coptic Orthodox Centre in Birmingham in 1989.On the 26th May 1991, H.G. Bishop Missael was consecrated as Bishop of the Diocese of Birmingham, later known as the Diocese of the Midlands & Affiliated Areas by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III.
His Grace was enthroned as the first Bishop of the Diocese and is the first Coptic Orthodox Bishop to be present within the United Kingdom.
His Grace Bishop Missael is based at the Coptic Orthodox Centre in Birmingham.
